About Skopelos

Skopelos island in the western Aegean Sea, is one of the most beautiful islands which comprise the Northern Sporades island group, which lies east of the Pelion peninsula on the mainland and north of the island of Euboea (Evia).

Skopelos is known for green hills, pebbly coves, and a landscape that feels more mainland than island. It’s a quieter cousin to nearby Skiathos, with small churches clinging to cliffs and walking routes that pass through pine forests, orchards and sea views. Elena’s guide to a holiday in Skopelos helps you explore the unpolished charm – including tavernas where locals still eat, and chapels made famous by film, yet left untouched by tourism. Stay in eco-friendly hillside hotels, or combine your trip with remote work options, quiet romantic corners, or some of the top cycling routes in Greece.

Skopelos is a green island and one of the most searched holiday destinations, though it has maintained a refreshing authenticityIt’s got a lovely old town full of white-washed houses, charming cobbled streets to explore on foot, more than 120 churches and chapels, the majority post-Byzantine, most hiding among its narrow, winding streets and alleyways. It is worth exploring the town and enjoy the great sea views, panoramas on hillsides. The pace of life is leisurely in town. Maritime history though comes alive in a walk from the Captain-town houses.

A charming port to wander in the small fishing harbour quay, sample the local dishes in the recommended tavernas by the locals and enjoy the Greek hospitality.

Traditional villages, there are two absolute gems on the island: Town and Glossa in the far north-west. Glossa, is more authentic still with its whitewashed houses on a hillside. I spent a pleasant couple of hours there, strolling upwards along quiet alleys, past shuttered homes through the lunchtime heat, to the village square. An oasis of shade, facing the Panagia Church and in the corner the “Plateia Cafe” serving the best local cheese pie “Skopelitiki”.

Then there’s its beautiful, picturesque, shingle, pebble or sandy beaches and turquoise waters. Backed by green hills full of pine and  olive trees are quiet. Kastani, a “Mamma Mia” location is really pretty. Another of my favourite ones is Panormos Beach. Ideal location for beach holidays at our recommended 4 star Blue Green Bay Hotel beach resort. Hospitality details coming up soon for the new season!

My stay on Skopelos last May had passed blissfully at my hosting – affordably luxurious hotel Skopelos Holidays Hotel & Spa near town.

Overall, what makes this island unique is the beauty of Skopelos, it’s rich culture and awesome people! You can’t help but have a stress free holiday on the “Mamma Mia” Island!
